It’s the first major museum exhibition in the United States to examine the link between architecture and the environment. 

The show honors influential architects like R. Buckminster Fuller and Beverly Willis!

Picasso in Fontainebleau

In the summer of 1921, Pablo Picasso worked extensively in a garage-turned-studio in Fontainebleau, France. 

He created remarkable art during this time, including two large paintings, “Three Women at the Spring” and “Three Musicians.” 

The “Picasso in Fontainebleau” exhibition brings these pieces together, shedding light on Picasso’s unconventional approach!

The display features four significant canvases, other works from this period, and rare photographs of his studio and family life!

The exhibition showcases never-before-seen embroideries, rarely-shown photographs, and an immersive installation that explores the relationship between mass media, gender, labor, and violence. 

The exhibition demonstrates the artist’s long-standing consideration of the cinematic dimensions of photography and war.

How can a 500-year-old printing process stay current? 

Jacob Samuel, a master printer and publisher, has modernized etching, collaborating with over 60 contemporary artists to bring this traditional technique into the 21st century. 

Some artists were new to printing, while others initially disliked it, but with Samuel’s guidance, they adapted it to their artistic visions. 

This exhibition showcases books and print portfolios, demonstrating the adaptability of etching for today’s art world.

Leslie Thornton, an artist with over five decades of experience, explores how we perceive and understand the world in her latest work, HANDMADE (2023). 

This video diptych juxtaposes the chaos of a digitally altered storm with the creation of a handwoven scientific instrument designed to study antimatter. 

Surprisingly, the device is assembled from hardware store parts. 

Thornton captures the interplay between scientific discovery and the material world using footage of fluid dynamics!

Carolina Caycedo: Spiral for Shared Dreams

Carolina Caycedo explores how art highlights resistance to environmental threats through her decade-long inquiry. 

She focuses on the impact of hydroelectric dams and infrastructure on bodies of water across the Americas and the communities relying on them. 

One of her works, Spiral for Shared Dreams, features 11 handmade fishing nets from four Mexican fishing communities facing diverse environmental challenges. 

These nets showcase natural and mythological symbols, such as a shrimp, an eye representing the Aztec goddess Chalchiuhtlicue, and the Aztec glyph atl, symbolizing dignified rage and inspiring those who dream of change. 

Artist’s Choice: Grace Wales Bonner—Spirit Movers

The Museum of Modern Art hosts an exhibition called “Artist’s Choice: Grace Wales Bonner—Spirit Movers.” 

It’s curated by Grace Wales Bonner, a fashion designer from London; the exhibition will display about 50 artworks from MoMA’s collection. 

This exhibition focuses on Black cultural and aesthetic practices inspired by the African diaspora. 

The selected artworks, chosen to represent “Spirit Movers,” aim to connect people and places. 

This exhibition has contributions from artists like Terry Adkins, Moustapha Dimé, Agnes Martin, Man Ray, Betye Saar, and David Hammons.

In this exhibition, Shana Moulton unveils a new, site-specific installation focused on capturing the grandeur and mundanity of everyday life. 

The installation transforms the Kravis Studio into a vibrant and diverse environment. 

It blends spiritual imagery, medical technology, pop culture, and references to both high art and dollar-store aesthetics. 

A part of Moulton’s ongoing Whispering Pines series, this project explores the aesthetics of pain, healing, mass-marketed wellness, and the challenges of middle age. 

It also features collaborative performances with composer Nick Hallett. 

Joan Jonas- Good Night Good Morning

The Museum of Modern Art is hosting a special exhibition, the first of its kind in New York City, dedicated to the artist Käthe Kollwitz. 

It’s also the largest display of her work in the US in over 30 years. 

This unique exhibit features around 120 rare pieces of her art, including drawings, prints, and sculptures from US and European collections. 

The exhibition follows her artistic journey from the 1890s to the 1930s, a time of significant change in Germany. 

It showcases her dedication to addressing social issues and her creative process through preparatory studies and working proofs.

Out Takes

  • Artist: Joan Jonas
  • Opening: May 2024 

Joan Jonas’s latest performance, Out Takes (2022/2024), continues her exploration of nature, ritual, and perception. 

It is closely tied to the major exhibition Joan Jonas: Good Night Good Morning. 

Using sound, video, and narration, Out Takes originates from Jonas revisiting unused footage from her archive.

The performance features videos from In the Trees (2015) and Moving Off the Land II (2019) and unreleased footage spanning 30 years, capturing scenes of forests, coastlines, and moments with Jonas’s dogs, Zina and Ozu. 

Monuments of Solidarity

Artist LaToya Ruby Frazier reimagines her works as “monuments for workers’ thoughts” for her exhibition, “Monuments for Solidarity.” 

The installations address the harmful effects of industrialization and deindustrialization, healthcare inequities, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan etc.

Through these nontraditional monuments, Frazier celebrates expressions of creativity, mutual support, and intergenerational collaboration.
